Overview
Offered here is a beautifully crafted 3/4 size violin labeled Istvan Nemez (also known as Stefan Nemes), a Hungarian maker active in Budapest during the 1930s and later in London. Nemez was a direct descendant of the legendary Samuel Nemessanyi, inheriting his tools, patterns, and a rich family tradition of violin making. This instrument dates from his early career in Kispest, Budapest, as indicated by the original label:
*Nemez istvan / Hengezeb keszitom / Kispest / Szent Imre hercegent 102*
Nemez studied under Robert Laumann and later became head repairer for Cyril Woodcock in London. Instruments by this maker are respected for their honest craftsmanship, excellent materials, and surprisingly powerful sound. They rarely appear on the market, and this 3/4 size example is a particular gem.
Condition – Immaculate
This violin is in exceptional condition for its age. There are no open cracks, open seams, or repairs. The original varnish is beautifully preserved with only the lightest, normal signs of respectful use. The fingerboard, pegs, nut, saddle, and endpin are all in excellent working order. This instrument has clearly been cared for by knowledgeable players and technicians.
Sound – Big, Warm, and Resonant
Despite its 3/4 size, this violin produces a surprisingly large, rich, and warm tone that projects well and fills a room. It has none of the thin or boxy qualities sometimes found in fractional instruments. The sound is complex, resonant, and responsive across all strings, with a particularly sweet and singing upper register. It offers a mature, full-bodied voice that will inspire advancing students and delight experienced players seeking a compact instrument.
Setup – Premium Ilja Grawert & Pirastro Obligato
This violin has been professionally set up to the highest standard by Ilja Grawert (a respected name in violin setup and restoration). The deluxe setup includes:
-
Carefully fitted bridge, soundpost, pegs, tailpiece, and chinrest to optimize playability and tone.
-
Pirastro Obligato strings – known for their warm, rich, complex sound with excellent projection and quick response. These strings complement the violin’s natural warmth perfectly, adding depth and polish.
